i’m a HUGE fan of dogfish head beers and festina peche is one of my favorites. it’s a summer seasonal that is fermented with peaches and has sort of a sour flavor. not for everyone but i happen to love it. i wanted to take that peach flavor a step further though, hence this cocktail.

turkey burgers with spicy strawberry jam
the jam is what makes these burgers so fantastic. it’s sweet, spicy and tangy all at once and takes a plain old turkey burger over the top!
for the burgers:
- 1 lb ground turkey breast
- salt and pepper
preheat your oven to 400. form into four patties and brown in a pan that’s been drizzled with olive oil over medium-high heat about 4 minutes per side. then finish them off in the oven for about 6 minutes more, being careful not to overcook.
for the jam:
- 1 cup chopped strawberries
- 1/2 cup red wine
- 1 tsp minced fresh ginger root
- 3 tbs packed brown sugar
- 1 cinnamon stick
- 1 pinch red pepper flakes
- 2 tbs apple cider vinegar
- pinch of salt
soak the strawberries in red wine for 20 minutes, then add to a pot along with ginger, brown sugar, cinnamon stick, crushed red pepper flakes, vinegar and salt and bring to a boil over medium heat. stir mixture every few minutes until it thickens. be careful not to let it burn! mine took about 18 minutes total. remove the cinnamon stick before serving. store any leftovers in tupperware, in the fridge for up to a week.
serve your burgers with a generous dollop of jam and whatever else floats your boat. we had ours with some yummy caramelized onions and lettuce on whole wheat english muffins.
lamb burgers with mango chutney
so i’m generally not a huge fan of indian food since a lot of it is either fried or drenched in cream based sauces. too. fatty.
that being said, i do love me some indian spices.
Ginger Spritzer

This low-cal spritzer really pops with the addition of fresh grated ginger. Try it out as a flavorful alternative to a vodka or gin and tonic.
Ingredients:
- 2 shots white rum (or substitute your favorite vodka or gin)
- 1/2 can seltzer water
- 1 handful fresh mint
- Crushed ice
- 1 tsp splenda*
- 1 tsp fresh grated ginger
- Juice of half a lemon
Directions:
- Add your crushed ice to a glass as well as your mint, ginger, lemon juice and sweetener of your choice.
- If you have a muddler, use it to bruise the mint and really bring the flavors out. The crushed ice is key here as it acts as an abrasive to help break everything up. If you don’t have a muddler, simply use the handle of a wooden spoon.
- Add in your rum, a bit more crushed ice and top off with seltzer. Ahh!!! Very refreshing.
Tips:
- you want to use splenda or something similar as sugar wouldn’t dissolve in the cold liquid. If you’re not a fan of sugar substitutes, you could always make a simple syrup and add that to the drink
- Making a simple syrup is just that – simple. Combine equal parts sugar and water 1 cup sugar, to 1 cup water and add to a small sauce pan. Bring mixture to a boil. Once all the sugar has dissolved into the water, remove from heat and allow to cool before adding to your drink.
