salmonbok

Salmon

  • 1/2 lb slab of salmon
  • 1/4  cup hoisin sauce
  • 1 tsp sesame seeds

To serve, make a bed of bok choy, top with salmon and sprinkle with sesame seeds.

Okay, I admit it, I’m easily swayed by the newest products.  I’m the kind of consumer that ad execs dream about.

If you tell me it will make my thighs look slimmer, I’ll buy it.  If you tell me it will make me appear an inch taller, I’ll buy it.  If you tell me it’ll bring me fame and good fortune…. well you get the idea.

So I have to admit I was skeptical at first with this product but boy did it ever deliver!  So much so in fact that I am about to purchase my second tube.

Use this in conjunction with Shu Uemura eyelash curler and your peepers will be thanking you.

Ensalada Capr’easy

enselada

This super easy to prepare salad says Summer to me.  The colors are as pleasing to the eye as the flavors are to the pallette.

  • 1 ball of fresh mozzerella, sliced about 1/4″ in thickness
  • zest of one lemon
  • chiffonade of fresh basil
  • 1 tbs extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 tsp balsalmic vinegar
  • kosher salt
  • black pepper
  • 1/4 tsp dried oregano

Assembly couldn’t be simpler.  Lay mozzerella out on serving platter and top each piece with a slice of tomato.

Zest lemon over top and sprinkle with oregano, salt and pepper.  Drizzle with olive oil and balsalmic vinegar and finish off by adding basil.

DIY Leather Button Ring

buttonring

Weekend project!  This is a great way to pass the time on a rainy Saturday, I did!  Super easy, very unique and comfy as all get out thanks to the leather.

What you’ll need:

  • Leather scrap
  • An old button
  • Needle and thread

Take the leather and cut it to your desired width.  Wrap it around your finger to determine length and cut accordingly, allowing a bit extra.  Overlap the ends about 1/2″ and place your button on top.  Simply sew the button onto the leather and voila!

If you don’t have leather scraps or old buttons lying around, check out your local craft store.  They’ve got a ton of both!

Turkey, Goat Cheese and Portabello Meatloaf

meatloaf

Trade in the beef for turkey, add in some goat cheese and portabello mushrooms and this certainly ain’t your Mama’s meatloaf!

  • 1 lb ground turkey
  • 1/4 cup goat cheese crumbles
  • 1 container of baby bellas, finely chopped
  • 1/2 cup oats
  • 1 small white onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 cup ketchup (1/4 for mix and reserve 1/4 to top loaf before baking)
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 2 tbs worcestershire
  • 1 tbs dijon mustard
  • 1 tbs yellow mustard
  • 2 tbs flat leaf parsley, chopped
  • 2 tbs olive oil
  • salt and pepper

Preheat your oven to 375.

Get a skillet going over medium heat and add olive oil.  Once the oil is heated, add in mushrooms, onion, garlic, salt and pepper and cook down for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.  Set aside and allow to cool.

In a large bowl, add turkey, oats, goat cheese, parsley, worcestershire, yellow mustard, dijon, half of your ketchup, mushroom mixture, salt and pepper.  Mix to combine with your hands but be careful not to over mix as this will result in a tough, rubbery texture.

If you have a loaf pan, spray it with non stick cooking spray and add in your meat mixture.  Shape to form your loaf.  If you don’t have a loaf pan, just use a cookie sheet.   Top with reserved ketchup and mustard seeds.

Bake at 375 for about 50 minutes or until internal temperature reads 155.  (The turkey police say optimum temp is 160 but it will carry over a bit!)

Kate Cusack

So I was putting together my piece on Exposed Zippers and came across Kate’s site.  Since getting into this whole blogging thing, I’ve stumbled upon so many amazing designers on accident.  Makes me think I should have gotten into it a lot sooner….

Anyway, onto Kate!

No, she’s not related to John or Joan.  I wonder if she gets that a lot?

Kate wears many creative hats including costume designer, sculptor and jeweler.  Check out this Marie Antoinette inspired wig she constructed using only plastic wrap!

tiffwigs_0003

True artists obviously see things we don’t.  I look at Saran wrap and think, mmm…leftovers. Kate on the other hand, having the artist’s eye, sees all of it’s potential.

Kate earned a BFA from MICA (in my hometown of Baltimore) and an MFA from the Yale School of Drama where she studied costume design.

When she’s not designing costumes or sculpting gorgeous works of art, she focuses on her jewelry line that is made up entirely of zippers!

She thinks of her jewelry as a mini-sculpture for the body.  Sure to get noticed, the wearer becomes sort of a mobile gallery if you will.   Her jewelry line includes pins, bracelets and necklaces.  Earrings and rings may not be far off either.

I recently got the chance to conduct a mini-interview with Kate and here it is!

You use materials in very unexpected ways, how much is that unconventional viewpoint a result of your costume work?

I think my love for transforming unusual materials into exciting creations is not as a result of my costume work, but is a result of my growing up in an artistic household.  My mother is an illustrator who creates stitched artwork and she depends on various patterns and textures of fabric to create realistic images. (www.margaretcusack.com)  She looks at a certain kind of fabric and sees a brick road or a roof of a building instead of just a red-ish looking piece of fabric.  Her ability to see more than what is simply in front of her is what I grew up around.  Our family also used to throw a huge Halloween party every year where kids and adults would arrive wearing home-made costumes.  Part of the challenge was to make something outrageous and unusual and, typically, it involved whatever materials were around the house.

These days fashion is driven by celebrities and magazines, how much do you think that success as a designer depends on getting access to that arena?

I think a lot of people who are not confident in their own personal style will always look to the magazines and the celebrities to see what is “in” or “cool”.  So in that sense, the success of a designer can depend on being show in magazines, etc.  Magazines are always looking for “the next thing” so I think the bigger challenge is to be featured in magazines/on celebrities but then to continue to develop and stay relevant.

Obviously there is a creative difference between designing of costumes and jewelry for a larger consumer market.  Do you think your career will lead more towards one field or the other in the future?

Right now, I have decided to really put most of my efforts into developing my Zipper Jewelry.  Recently I designed costumes for a multi-media opera/dance piece.  I used a lot of unconventional materials –like plastic forks and clear recycling bags.  It was definitely a wonderful creative experience, but once it was complete, I was happy to return to my studio to continue my work with the Zipper Jewelry.  The two experiences are wildly different–one is extremely collaborative and the other is very solitary.  I think I may continue to create costumes or sculptural-wearable-art, but it will not be for traditional theater.

***************************************************************

I love that Kate doesn’t set artistic limitations on herself. Says Kate, “Because I see everything as an artist, it means I am freed up from certain constraints that typically come with certain professional approaches. I can see the material for what it is, what it “should” be used for, and then I can decide how I want to re-imagine it.”

Whether she’s designing elaborate costumes for stage productions, making wigs out of kitchen essentials, or reinventing the zipper, one constant with Kate is her love of unusual materials and her ability to transform them.

Mexican Hot Chocolate Cake

hotchocolatecake

Made this for a friend’s birthday party recently that was a Cinco De Mayo theme so this seemed only fitting.  It came out great!

I was inspired by Mexican hot chocolate which is traditionally made with chilis and cinnamon.

Cake:

  • 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
  • 1 1/4 cups granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cups (1 1/2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 3 eggs, room temperature
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 tbs cinnamon
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper
  • 1 cup milk
  • 2 jalapenos, minced very fine

Frosting:

  • 3 1/4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/3 cup milk, room temperature
  • 1/4 cup (1/2 stick) unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 ounces bakers chocolate, melted
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 tbs instant coffee
  • 1 tsp McCormick Cocoa Chile Blend

Preheat oven to 325.  Grease two 9″ round baking pans.

Microwave chocolate chips about 1 minute, stir and do an additional 10 – 15 seconds if need be.

In a large bowl cream together butter and sugar.  Add in vanilla and eggs and beat 1 – 2 minutes or until smooth.  Beat in melted chocolate.

In a medium bowl, combine flour, salt, baking soda, cinnamon and cayenne.  Beat into chocolate mixture alternately with the milk.  Fold in jalapenos.  Pour into prepared pans and bake at 325 for 10 mins.  Then, bump up the temperature to 350 for the remaining 18 – 25 or until a toothpick comes out clean.  I’ve found that this alleviates the infamous dome syndrome that happens when the cake cooks too quickly on the outer edges and not in the middle.

Invert onto wire racks to cool.

To make the frosting add instant coffee to your milk and stir to dissolve granules.  Melt the bakers chocolate at 30 second intervals in the microwave stirring in between until just melted.  In a medium bowl, combine powdered sugar, coffee/milk mixture, butter, melted chocolate, McCormick Cocoa Chile Blend, vanilla and salt.  Beat until fluffy.

Frost your cake and enjoy!

Nation Ltd. by Jen Menchaca

nationlltdbyjen_72_500px

trendsetters_750

Jen’s rise to fashion designer is a somewhat unlikely story.  In fact, her father always wanted her to follow in his footsteps and become an engineer for NASA but Jen never had the passion for this and she wasn’t exactly feelin’ the whole spacesuit thing.

After earning a B.S. in Advertising from U.T. she moved to NYC and landed a job as a cocktail waitress.  A few years later, Jen decided to relocate to LA where she found herself working for David E. Kelly productions on the off beat dramedy, Ally McBeal.

Jen was always a fan of her father’s white v-necks because they were so soft and comfy.  However, the pit stains and yellowing could be a bit distracting and thus made them unwearable in public.  This is what inspired her to create her own version of the perfect, worn in men’s inspired t-shirt.  People loved it and it quickly became a side business for Jen.  She juggled both careers for some time but before long Nation Ltd. got so big that it became her full time business.  With so many celeb fans of the brand, it’d probably be easier to name who hasn’t been spotted in Jen’s designs rather than who has.  What began as a love of her Dad’s old t-shirts, blossomed into quite a cult following.

These days her line includes dresses, tunics and of course, t-shirts.  Jen’s not stopping there though, look for leggings due out this Summer!

Although Jen didn’t exactly follow in her Dad’s footsteps, something tells he’s pretty proud of her.

Cheesey Chicken Quesadillas

chickenq

This is the best way to use up leftover chicken and throw together a weeknight meal in minutes.

  • 2 cups leftover chicken breast, chopped
  • 1/4 red onion, sliced
  • 2 wedges of  The Laughing Cow Light Cheese
  • 1/2 cup shredded Mexican cheese blend
  • 2 whole wheat tortillas (I love Tamxicos!)

Take one tortilla and spread it with The Laughing Cow Light Cheese.  Top with chicken, onion and shredded cheese and place second tortilla on top.

Spray a skillet with non-stick cooking spray and cook quesadilla over medium heat about 3 minutes per side.  Once heated through, slice into wedges and serve with salsa and sour cream.

Gossip Girl Fashion

gossip_girls_500x375

Whether you’re a fan of the show or not, you gotta love the fashion goin’ on here!

If I ever had the luxury of meeting the man behind all of this, costume designer Eric Daman, I would literally bow at his feet.  He never ceases to amaze with the truly unique ensembles that he comes up with week after week.  Tuning in for the fashion is almost as guilty a pleasure as the various scandals going on.

I’m literally busting at this news!!!!!!!

Designer Anna Sui has announced that she will be teaming up with Target to put out a line of fashion forward albeit budget friendly clothing that is inspired by the show’s Upper East Side hotties.  The line will be sold in 250 Target stores across the US and will run from September 13 – October 17, 2009.

Top Chef Masters

2009_04_masterssf

James and I are so totally stoked to see this!!  We’re both huge fans of Top Chef but this is gonna be like Top Chef on steroids!

I think I’m most excited to see Michael Chiarello and Wylie Dufresne

I miss Michael’s show Easy Entertaining that used to air on The Food Network.  It still plays in syndication and occasionally I’ll catch an episode here or there but I’ve seen them all about a hundred times.  I love his catalog/website Napa Valley.  James and I drool over all the neat gadgets and yummy foods.  We got a bunch of people on our Christmas list gifts from there this year and they were a hit!

Wylie Dufresne is the king of molecular gastronomy which, for you non food nerds, is the scientific study of the physical and chemical processes that occur in cooking.  Basically, it’s the epitome of playing with your food!  Some of the things he comes up with are nothing short of mind blowing.

If you’re a foodie, you must check out this show!

Season premiere Wednesday, June 10th at 10pm on Bravo.

Fashionspiration: Audrey Hepburn

audrey

It’s no secret that this woman is a fashion icon.   She didn’t follow trends, she set them.

Audrey was the epitome of grace, elegance, style and poise.

One of my favorite movies of all time is Funny Face.  No surprise there, since the entire film centers around fashion.

And how about Breakfast at Tiffany’s?  That infamous black dress she wore was none other than Givenchy people!!

Audrey is often still a muse for designers when planning their newest line or laying out their runway shows.  She’s classic and her beauty and sense of style are timeless.

I love you Audrey!

Dressed to the Nuevos Nachos

fancynachos-1

These nachos are each individually dressed and they’re wearing it so well…

Up the fancy factor at your next shin dig by serving these up.  You’re sure to impress your guests!

Salsa:

  • 1 ripe mango, diced
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1/4 cup red onion, diced
  • 1 jalapeno, diced (if you don’t like a lot of heat, remove the seeds and ribs)
  • juice of 1 lime
  • handful of fresh cilantro, chopped
  • 6 tomatoes, seeded (I used Campari)
  • salt and pepper

Combine all ingredients in a bowl and set aside.

Nachos:

  • 1/2 bag Tostitos Scoops
  • about 1/2 of a store bought rotisserie chicken, shredded
  • 1 1/2 cups Parrano cheese
  • 1/2 cup cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 10 kalamata olives, chopped
  • 3/4 cup fat free sour cream

Preheat oven to 375.

Line a cookie sheet with aluminum foil and place tortilla chips on it.  Avoid the broken ones.  Remember we’re going for fancy here…..

Fill each chip with a small amount of chicken, cheese and olives being careful not to over fill them.  Bake chips for about 10 minutes or until cheese is melted.

Meanwhile, scoop your sour cream into a Ziploc baggie and snip a tiny bit off of one corner to create a piping bag.

To serve, spoon salsa onto each nacho and pipe sour cream on top.

Tips:

Parrano is one of my favorite hybrid cheeses.  The combination of Parmesan and Gouda makes for a nutty, buttery finish.

Juliet Ames

juliet-ames

Ahh blogging….

Everyday there is new ground to cover and new people to meet, like Juliet!  She came across little old me by way of Margaux Lange and sent the sweetest email saying how much she loved the site.

Juliet collects vintage plates and recycles them into her own masterpieces.   I was so stoked to do this feature because she blends my two favorite worlds —  food and fashion.   Who would ever think that plates could be so damn fashionable?!

The queen of the 30 Minute Meal, Rachel Ray recently rocked one of Juliet’s necklaces on her show!!  How cool is that?!

In addition to this ahhhmazing exposure, her work has been featured in countless magazines including, Baltimore Magazine, Style, and Urbanite just to name a few.

broken-plate-pendantdouble-circle-broken-plate-bracelet

I recently got the opportunity to “sit down” for an interview with Juliet.  Check it out!

Did you always know that this is where you’d be one day?

I always knew that I would work in a creative field, but never in a million years thought that I would become “The Broken Plate Lady.” Out of college, I worked in Art Administration but when I found myself jealous of the artists that I was working around, I knew I had to figure out some way to make money making art.

How did you “break” into the jewelry making business? Pun intended!

I started college majoring in photography, but when darkroom skills became an unmarketable skill (and when my camera equipment was stolen) I switched gears and decided to learn some new skills in jewelry making. When I graduated, I had no idea what to do with my Craft Degree, so I did not make anything for about 6 months. Finally, I had to make something, anything, just to get this creative bug out of my system. I took some old plates that I had collected from the thrift shop, broke them up, and used them to mosaic my mailbox When I was finished, there was a pile of broken plate shards left that I could not bear to throw away so I wrapped one in silver solder and wore it as a necklace. I instantly started getting orders for more, found a few places to sell (including Etsy) and applied for my first craft show. That show was such a huge success that I knew that I could defiantly make more money at this then in the part time non-profit job that I had at the time. I put in my 2 weeks and the rest is history.

What inspires you as an artist?

I am really inspired by all of the amazing artists that repurpose materials into new exciting things. I love being surprised when I learn what something is made of. I am most inspired by the community of crafters that are all so supportive, especially my fellow members of The Baltimore Etsy Street Team.

Getting Rachel Ray to wear your designs on television is huge!! How did this come about?

Well, remember how I quit my real job after that first craft show? Well, I did not know it at the time, but I was pregnant. Surprise! After I had my son, I was stuck in a perpetual breastfeeding position for the first 3 months (because he was so little) this meant the TV, especially the Food Network, became my new best friend. I always took notice of Rachael Ray’s jewelry and thought, “Man, she wears some ugly jewelry; I bet she would like mine!” I sent her stylist a letter and a necklace and hoped for the best. A few weeks later I discovered a message from her stylist saying that she left my necklace in Rachael’s dressing room to see if she liked it, and she loved it! She wanted me to overnight 20 pieces for them to choose from because she had a cover shoot and was appearing on The View the following day! I rushed a bunch of pieces to them and crossed my fingers. I waited and waited and waited and started to give up hope that she would ever wear something of mine. It might have been a year later when I got an email from a customer telling me that she thought she saw Rachael Ray wear my necklace on her 30 Minute Meals show! I had to wait a whole week for the repeat, and low and behold she was wearing my necklace! I was super excited! No sightings since, but they are still holding onto a belt buckle, which I occasionally check in to her shows to see if she is wearing.

You don’t meet too many Juliets these days. What’s the story behind your name?

Juliet is my grandmother’s name. I grew up being called “Judy” because, I guess, they thought Juliet sounded too formal for an awkward little red headed girl. Once I got into college, I just stopped correcting teachers who called me Juliet and it stuck.

You use vintage plates in your jewelry making. Where do you find such gorgeous plates?

I find plates all over. Usually I go to thrift shops, flea markets, eBay and sometimes Etsy. Sometimes though, I cannot resist a new plate from the Martha Stewart Collection at Macy’s.

I just started a new online Etsy shop to sell off some of my collection at justplates.etsy.com

What’s next for you?

I am not sure how long the indie crafting scene will draw big crowds so I have been concentrating more on custom orders and wedding party orders. I am also working on developing a fine silver line of recycled plate jewelry and am working on a book proposal.

To purchase one of Juliet’s amazing designs, check out this link that has all the info:
